
Melvin I. Roat, M.D., F.A.C.S. is a board certified, fellowship trained ophthalmologist practicing comprehensive ophthalmology and sub-specializing in the cornea. After many years of running his own practice (next door to Jahnle Eye Associates at Riddle Hospital), he joined Jahnle Eye Associates in 2024. He evaluates and treats patients with dry eye, allergies, glaucoma, diabetes, and age-related eye diseases. Dr. Roat works to ensure that each patient fully understands his or her eye condition. Clear and straightforward explanations are given. Questions are welcome! Additionally, eye exams are comprehensive and thorough in order to achieve the best possible outcome. He has been named a Main Line Today magazine “Top Doc” five times.
Dr. Roat was on the teaching staff of Wills Eye Hospital and an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Jefferson Medical College for almost 25 years, where he was actively involved in training medical students, ophthalmology residents, and corneal surgery fellows. He has trained more than 300 ophthalmology residents and fellows.
Dr. Roat lectures to other ophthalmologists at regional, national, and international meetings. In addition to his clinical and surgical expertise, he has contributed widely to his specialty through more than 50 publications in medical journals and textbooks.
Dr. Roat completed his undergraduate and medical degree at the University of Toronto and then went on to complete his fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Eye and Ear Hospital.
Dr. Roat is a diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology, a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
