Optometric Eye Care at Jahnle Eye Associates: Meet the Doctors Behind Your Everyday Vision

When most people think of Jahnle Eye Associates, they think of cataract surgery and advanced medical eye care — and for good reason. But a large part of keeping your eyes healthy happens long before any procedure is ever needed, through routine, everyday eye care. That’s the work of our optometrists, and it’s one of the most important parts of what we do.

Optometrist vs. ophthalmologist: what’s the difference?

It’s a common question. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors (M.D.s) who diagnose and treat eye disease and perform surgery, such as cataract and glaucoma procedures. Optometrists (O.D.s) provide primary eye care — comprehensive eye exams, vision correction, contact lenses, and the detection and management of many common eye conditions.

At a practice like ours, the two work hand in hand. Your optometrist handles your routine care and is often the first to catch a developing problem; if something needs medical or surgical attention, our ophthalmologists are right down the hall. For patients, that means everything stays under one roof.

What our optometrists provide

Our optometry team cares for patients of all ages, from children’s first eye exams through senior eye health. Services include:

  • Comprehensive eye exams — checking not just your vision but the overall health of your eyes
  • Contact lens fittings — including specialty and hard-to-fit lenses
  • Myopia management — strategies to help slow the progression of nearsightedness in children
  • Diabetic and disease-related eye exams — monitoring eyes affected by diabetes and other conditions
  • Optomap retinal imaging — a wide-view look at the back of the eye, often without dilation
  • Routine monitoring for conditions like dry eye, glaucoma, and age-related changes

Meet the optometrists

Dr. Edward Mekel, O.D. has been with Jahnle Eye Associates since 1991. A graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, he was recognized by the Pennsylvania Optometric Association for highest academic achievement and has extensive experience fitting specialty contact lenses and caring for patients of all ages.

Dr. Zachary Tlumak, O.D. earned his Doctor of Optometry from the New England College of Optometry and completed a residency focused on ocular disease, low vision rehabilitation, and acquired brain injury at the VA Hospital in West Haven, CT. He sees patients at our Havertown and Media offices.

Dr. Kelly Moritz, O.D. is the newest member of our optometry team, caring for patients in the Philadelphia area since 2016. She focuses on comprehensive eye exams, myopia management for younger patients, and specialty contact lens fittings, and she sees patients at our Havertown and Media locations.
