What is a post-cataract laser?

What is a “Post-Cataract Laser” procedure?

A post-cataract laser refers to a medical procedure known as a YAG Laser Posterior Capsulotomy which is performed after cataract surgery. It’s not a separate type of cataract surgery but rather a follow-up treatment designed to address a specific issue that can occur after cataract surgery.

During cataract surgery, the cloudy natural lens in the eye is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) to restore vision. In some cases, the thin membrane behind the IOL, called the posterior capsule, may become cloudy or wrinkled over time. This condition is known as posterior capsular opacification (PCO). An opacified capsule can develop weeks, months, or even years after the initial cataract surgery. The main symptom of an opacified capsule is blurry or cloudy vision.

What are the benefits of the laser?

The primary benefit of a YAG laser capsulotomy is improved vision. Patients often experience a rapid and significant improvement in their visual acuity following the procedure.

What can I expect the day of my laser procedure?

The laser procedure is done in-office, and can be done at Jahnle Eye’s Havertown or Media office. The procedure is done one eye at a time. If both eyes need to be scheduled for the laser, it is usually done one to two weeks apart.

Dr. Jahnle laser

Your eye will be dilated with eye drops to allow the doctor to get a better view of the back of your eye. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and express any concerns with your doctor.

The procedure itself is usually quick and relatively painless. The laser procedure takes about 1 minute, and your exam will take no longer than a normal comprehensive eye exam. There is usually no need for any medication or eye drops after the procedure, but your doctor will prescribe drops if needed.

If you have any additional questions about the post-cataract laser procedure or would like to schedule an evaluation or procedure with Dr. Richard Jahnle or Dr. Kelly Krespan, please give our scheduling department a call at 610-446-2260 extension 4, or Request an Appointment Online.
